Sason: "our goal is to establish an organization that would be dedicated to the advancement of conceptual quantum chemical insights. Coulson’s dictum with a modern twist, “Give me insight and good numbers”, characterizes this goal. Thus, much of the scientific focus of the organization would be on ways to comprehend problems of bonding, structure and reactivity, by either constructing the whole from building blocks or by deconstructing the whole into meaningful building blocks."

The different names that has been proposed for the society, together with the comments about each of them.

  • SCI : Society of Chemical Insight

Mathias: "Simple, short and describes what the society should be."

Sason: "After having looked at the various names my feeling is that SCI [expressed SKI] is a general acronym, which has a nice ring to it. By using "insight" instead of the more restrictive "chemical bonding", this name does not leave out reactivity."

David: There are many SCI organizations, and one would need to think up suitable domain names. sci.org is already ‘taken’, with http://www.sci.org/papers.html being somewhat molecular

  • ACI : Association of Chemical Insight

Similar as the previous proposition, but aoci.com, .net and .org are available.

David: A quick search didn’t reveal any particularly bad connotations for ACI: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/aci

  • ACIT : Association (for gaining) Chemical Insight (through) Theory

Mathias : there is also an enormous amount of theory/models/insight based on data from experiment instead of computation. We are talking about a relatively small community in experimental chemistry, mainly in or around physical organic chemistry (but de facto also including inorganic chemistry). From the Hawaii conferences, where this experimental community mixes with theoreticians, I know that the interaction and exchange between insight-oriented theoreticians and experimentalists is enormously fruitful.

Klaus : "Theory" can be broadly interpreted. Challenging new experimental results are always valuable.

Sason : I think we should not exclude communities... ACIT sounds great to me.

  • CIC: Chemical Insight Community

Benoit: the term "community" may suits better to what we want to create than the more formal "society" and "association" that points to classical formal organisations.

  • ISCI : International Society of Chemical Insight

Still quite simple and it emphasises the international character. isci.com domain name is available.

  • ISIRS : International Society for Insight into Reactivity and Structure

Sason: "Phonetically Ai'SIRS. This acronym is all inclusive [not restricted to chemical bonding] and have a nice ring."

  • SIRES : Society for Insight into Reactivity and Structure

Sason: "Phonetically SaiRES. Also all inclusive [not restricted to chemical bonding] and have a nice ring."

  • SICB : Society of Insight and Chemical Bonding

  • ISCB : International Society of Chemical Bonding

Mathias : "Simple + contains “international” + shows relationship with sister society ESCB + shows relationship with already existing international community around the annual ICCB conference ( organizers: Alexandrova and Boldyrev). And, of course, this does include reactions which are nothing else but bonds being formed and broken."
